Introduction to societies and cultures of North Africa. Topics covered may include: history and socio-cultural role of Islam, the relations between Arabs and Berbers, ethnography of religious institutions, ritual practices, everyday life, gender, colonialism and post-colonialism, problems of state and religion. Prerequisite(s): ANTH 1001 or ANTH 1002 or ANTH 1003 [1.0], or 1.0 credit at the 1000-level in SOCI, AFRI, ENGL, GEOG, HIST, HUMR, INDG, JOUR, PSCI, RELI or WGST.Lectures and discussion three hours a week.
