Introduction to group theory: permutation groups, Lagrange’s theorem, normal subgroups, homomorphism theorems. Introduction to ring theory: ring of polynomials, integral domains, ideals, homomorphism theorems. Hermitian form, spectral theorem for normal operators, classical groups. Precludes additional credit for MATH 2108 and MATH 3101. Prerequisite(s): MATH 1102 with a grade of C+ or higher, or MATH 2107 with a grade of B+ or higher, or permission of the School.Lectures three hours a week, tutorial one hour a week.
